What Is Nerve Ablation?
The destruction (also called ablation) of nerves is a method that may be used to reduce certain kinds of chronic pain by preventing the transmission of pain signals.
This procedure is an injection of an anesthetic that is delivered to a specific nerve to relieve pain. We may also use nerve blocks as a diagnostic tool to determine the source of your pain.
Common Treatment Areas
A nerve block is an injection of anesthetic on or near the nerve/pain receptor connected to a specific nerve or joint. The procedure is used as a diagnostic test to determine if the pain is actually coming from the nerve or joint. Nerve blocks can happen in the following areas:
- Facet joints of the spine
- Hip joint, sacroiliac joint and coccyx
- Shoulder, elbow, and hands
- Knee, ankle, and foot
- Occipital, saphenous, pudendal nerves
